How Republicans Plan to Steal the Next Election

This year’s Presidential election may have the highest voter turnout in recent history with millions of new voters being registered. But as the last two presidential elections have shown, registering new voters is not enough. Getting their and others’ votes actually counted, is the real challenge. But party officials and the major media are focusing on voter fraud, a traditionally very insignificant problem — the offices of ACORN in Las Vegas were raided just this week amid accusations of registering fraudulent voters. The corporate media are downplaying the larger problem of how electronic voting machines can be rigged, how voters are being purged on a mass scale, and that it usually poor people and people of color who are disenfranchised. Today we take a look at voting integrity in this year’s election and what you can do about it.

GUEST: Brad Friedman, investigative journalist and voting integrity expert with BradBlog.com, co-founder of velvetrevolution.us.

Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth

As of air-time for this program, the stock market continued plummeting amid increased fears of a collapse on Wall Street. Investors have begun selling off their stocks, and according to the LA Times on Friday, “the selling bore all the hallmarks of an investor panic as stock prices swung frenetically.” Meanwhile foreign markets in Europe and Asia have also begun a down slide. In a sign of the times, the National Debt Clock in New York has run out of digits to record the growing figure of the how much the government owes. The government’s current debt at about 10.2 trillion dollars. Reflecting this is the growing personal debt that citizens have been incurring for years now in the US. The concept of debt is the topic of the new book by Margaret Atwood, the pre-eminent author of more than 35 books of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, including The Handmaid’s Tale, The Blind Assassin, and others. She has won numerous literary awards including the prestigious Booker Prize. Her new non-fiction book is called “Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.”
