GUEST: Hans Bennett, Philadelphia based photo-journalist who has been documenting the free-Mumia movement
Nearly 25 years ago, on December 9th, 1981, a young journalist named Mumia Abu-Jamal was arrested in Philadelphia in connection with the murder of a police officer. Abu-Jamal was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death a year later, in a trial that Amnesty International recently declared, was a “violation of minimum international standards that govern fair trial procedures and the use of the death penalty.” Mumia Abu Jamal is widely considered to be a political prisoner and his supporters include the Japanese Diet, the European Parliament, and members of the British and German Parliaments. In 2003, he was declared an honorary citizen of Paris, the first since Pablo Picasso was similarly honorted in the 1970s. And in April of this year, the Paris suburb of St. Denis named a major street after Abu-Jamal. Yesterday, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution denouncing the street naming. Supporters of Mumia are organizing for December 9th of this year to mark the 25th anniversary of his arrest in Philadelphia.
I am a friend of the family of Slain Officer Daniel Faulkner.
I am outraged at the amount of recognition that a murderer has received, and yet the hero, who gave his life to preserve justice, has not (recieved). This is an insult to any Police Officer and civil servant. It is amazing how all a man had to do is write a book of lies, and suddenly the world will pay attention. I guess if Hitler could do it, anyone else can too. Struggle? Please! I challenge you to speak with those who give their lives in order to preserve the freedoms of the people, Military or Police. Then you will begin to understand the true meaning of the word.
Mumia is a Murderer and the people who deserve recognition on such a mass scale are those who the public media forgets to name. The true fallen heroes. People such as Officer Daniel Faulkner, My Grandfather Edward who died serving with the NYPD, and all who have bravely stood up against individuals such as Mumia.
The first Israeli-Palestinian peace talks of the Obama administration are set to begin – we’ll look at what’s in store. And, California defeats two major pieces of legislation in a victory for the chemical industry – we’ll find out what recourse there is. Plus, writer Robert Jensen joins us in studio to analyze the Right, and discuss how progressives can fight back. And this week’s People’s Marketplace.
