Analyzing Ariel Sharon’s Tenure
GUEST: Stav Adivi, Program liaison for Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, was a refusnik in the Israeli military

Ariel SharonIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke this week. He remained in a coma after two rounds of surgery. At the very least, it is likely the end of Sharon’s political career. According to much of the mainstream media, Sharon’s demise comes at a time when he was finally embracing a strategy of peace by pulling out Jewish settlers and most Israeli troops from the Gaza strip. Most Palestinians remember Sharon for Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon, during which pro-Israeli Christian militiamen massacred hundreds of Palestinians in the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatilla.

OC Activist Roughed up by Police
GUESTS: Theresa Dang, Orange County Activist, Coyotl Tezcalipoca, member of the Tonantzin Collective

Coyotl getting arrestedOn Tuesday January 3rd, about a hundred immigrant rights activists gathered to protest Costa Mesa’s City Council decision to train local officers in immigration enforcement. They faced off with approximately forty supporters of city Mayor Alan Mansoor’s controversial plan. During the public comments section of the meeting, Minuteman Project founder James Gilchrist was present to express his organization’s support for the plan. Local activist Coyotl Tezcalipoca of the Tonantzin Collective, who was a guest on Uprising, also addressed the council. As Coyotl asked his supporters to stand in support of Immigrants rights, Mayor Mansoor cut him off and declared that his time was up. Tezcalipoca was then forcefully taken into custody by police officers and later charged with disrupting an assembly and obstructing an arresting officer — this in full view of a number of media representatives.

GUESTS: California State Assembly member Karen Bass, UTLA President A.J. Duffy

Arnold SchwarzeneggerGovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his State of the State Speech yesterday at 5 pm, surprising many Democrats by embracing issues he had rejected in the past. These included raising the minimum wage, freezing higher-education fees and importing low-cost prescription drugs. Schwarzenegger introduced his plans for a huge public works plan that would cost $222.6 billion to rebuild roads, bridges, levees, schools, prisons, and courthouses. He opened his speech admitting his mistakes of last year’s ballot measures.

Darwin’s Nightmare
GUEST: Writer and Director, Hubert Sauper

Darwin's Nightmare“Darwin’s Nightmare,” an award winning documentary film written and directed by Hubert Sauper, examines the effects of the multinational fish industry in the African country of Tanzania. Around the 1960’s, a new fish, the Nile Perch, was artificially introduced into Tanzania’s Lake Victoria as a scientific experiment. As a predator, the Nile Perch’s inclusion caused the extinction of nearly all of Lake Victoria’s native fish species. Introduced with the intention of selling its white fillets to Europeans, the Nile Perch quickly became the area’s leading export. Sauper’s documentary film portrays the agonizing human impact of globalization in Tanzania’s fish industry by exploring the unique personalities of the people who live around Lake Victoria. “Darwin’s Nightmare,” is a story of fishermen, street children, prostitutes, foreign capitalists and cargo pilots.

Darwin’s Nightmare is being considered for an Oscar nomination. It will be showing at the Laemle’s Music Hall in Beverly Hills on February 10th.
