Remembering Violeta Parra

We look back at the life and music of one of Chile’s most legendary folk singers, Violeta Parra. Violeta Parra was born in 1917 in the small town of San Carlos, in southern Chile. She was the daughter of an elementary schoolteacher and seamstress. Her brother, Nicanor, became one of Chile’s most notable poets. During the 1950’s, Violeta traveled throughout Chile collecting numerous folk songs, stories, and poems. Her research helped to popularize folk music in Chile. By the early 1960’s Parra began infusing folk with leftist political lyrics. As a pioneer of such a fusion, she became the de-facto founder of Chile’s Nueva Cancion Movement. Her song, “Gracias a la Vida,†is one of the most performed songs in Latin America. Parra’s life ended tragically when she committed suicide in 1967.
