The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial

Great Tennessee Monkey TrialGUESTS: Actor and activist, Mike Farrell, Gordon Hunt, Director.

In 1925, a high school teacher named John Scopes defied Tennessee state law by teaching the scientific theory of evolution in his classroom. The legal battle that ensued, called the John Scopes trial, drew national attention to the debate between creationism and evolution. More than eighty years later, as legal battles continue over teaching evolution in schools, L.A. Theatre Works presents, “The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial.” The script, written by Peter Goodchild, draws from actual transcripts of the John Scopes trial. The play is directed by Gordon Hunt and stars Ed Asner and Mike Farrell. “The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial,” ends its 24 city national tour this week in Los Angeles. I had the opportunity earlier to speak with Gordon Hunt and Mike Farrell about the play.
