Bush’s Nuclear Deal with India
GUEST: Arun Gandhi, Co-founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, Gandhi’s grandson
President Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh struck a nuclear deal during Bush’s visit to India. The deal could transform relations between the two countries. For the US to acknowledge India’s status as a nuclear military power, is a reversal of three decades of US policy. The nuclear deal has to be ratified by the US Congress. A spokesman for one of the socialist parties in the Indian government said of the agreement: “Today is one of the most shameful days in the history of independent India.” A 2005 poll found that about 54 percent of Indians said they had confidence that Bush would generally do the right things in world affairs, well above the confidence levels in Europe. But tens of thousands are protesting Bush’s visit, as well as his act of placing a wreath at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.
