Hungry for More
GUEST: Robyn McGee, Director of Women’s Resources at California State University in Dominguez Hills, and author of “Hungry for More: A Keeping-it-Real Guide for Black Women on Weight and Body Image”
After losing her sister to gastric-bypass surgery, Robyn McGee tackled the issues of weight and body image in black women. She discovered that obesity affects black women more so than women from any other race. The result was a book – “Hungry for More: A Keeping-it-Real Guide for Black Women on Weight and Body Image.” In Hungry for More, Robyn McGee examines the ways in which depression, racism, and sexual abuse have contributed to obesity. As we continue to celebrate International Women’s Day, which was yesterday, we take a look today at the insidious affliction of poor body image and it’s consequences, particularly as it affects black women. These issues are of course relevant to all women of color, and ultimately all women. Robyn McGee is the Director of Women’s Resources at California State University in Dominguez Hills. I spoke with her in studio recently about her book, “Hungry for More.”
