The Beginning of the End of Roe?
GUEST: Miriam Gerachi, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood in Los Angeles
Last week, South Dakota Governor Michael Rounds signed into law legislation that nearly completely banned a woman’s right to abortion. The legislation was passed by a meager 12 vote margin in the South Dakota House. It is now a felony in South Dakota for a doctor to perform an abortion unless the woman’s life is in danger. There are no exceptions for rape or incest. The National Lawyers Guild has called for the impeachment of Governor Rounds over the ban. Meanwhile ten other states — Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia — are considering bans that also would criminalize most abortions. The South Dakota abortion ban may wind its way to the Supreme Court for a final decision. With Bush’s anti-choice Supreme Court candidate Samuel Alito in place on the court, this could be the beginning of a nation-wide abortion ban.
