US Military Moves into Pyongtaek, South Korea

GUEST: Hwayoung Lee, Chair of the Korea Truth Commission in the US

On March 6th, 2006, South Korean riot police attempted to forcefully displace residents of the autonomous farming village of Daechuri. Farmers from Daechuri and nearby Doduri have been actively resisting the imminent domain seizure of their lands for the purposes of extending a United States Army base. In December 2004, the South Korean government had pledged to allocate about 2800 acres in order to expand Camp Humphreys in the port city of Pyeongtaek. The proposed expansion would displace nearly 1,400 residents. Last month, residents of Daechuri marched on Pyeongtaek’s city hall where they declared their village an autonomous region. This March 17th, thousands of activists in Pyeongtaek plan to announce the start of a new planting season in defiance. Meanwhile, the governments of the United States and South Korea have come to differing conclusions about how much expansion and troop relocation plans will cost.
