LA Taxi Workers Continue Their Struggle

GUESTS: Zahid Butt, Los Angeles Taxi Workers Alliance, Hamid Khan, Esecutive Director of the South Asian Network.

Recently, the Los Angeles Taxi Workers Alliance forced LAX officials to sit down and listen to their complaints regarding abuses and harassments at the hands of the ATS. (Authorized Transportation Service) “Airport days” are the most critical workdays for Los Angeles taxi workers, and they feel that the ATS has made LAX a hostile work environment. Citing ATS practices such as “short-trips,” excessive fines, and expulsion of drivers from the airport for trumped-up reasons, the Los Angeles taxi Workers Alliance has called for humane treatment for its workers.

There will be a motion on the contract between the City of Los Angeles and ATS on Friday March 17th at 9 am, at City Hall, 200 N. Spring Street, Room 340.

I used to work for ATS and while I feel for the workers and side with them on several of their issues, I wish that they would understand that the same foul treatment they receive, the employees receive as well. The same complaint that drivers have that they are punished without being able to defend themselves or confront their accuser, is shared by the employees. I have seen many employees suspended or fired just on the word of a driver, without being given the chance to defend themselves or explain the situation. THe taxi drivers and ATS employees are harrassed by management. Instead of being against each other they should unite and create a better working environment for both groups. I would appreciate it if you would withhold my name and personal information
