Coalition for a New American Century
GUEST: Anna Mendez, a banquet server at the LAX Hilton Hotel
Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport has the highest concentration of hotels in LA. Now a high profile campaign has been initiated to improve conditions for workers, communities and the hotel industry in the area. A 2004 study of the cities around LAX – Hawthorne, Lennox and Inglewood – found extremely high poverty rates, and a median household income of 25% lower than in L.A. County as a whole. The problem apparently is not a lack of jobs as much as it is low wages and poor working conditions.
