Police Brutality Against Transgender People

GUEST: Maria Roman, transgender Latina activist, Ron Brenesky, Co-Founder of Unity Coalition

As part of a campaign launched in September 2005, Amnesty International has released a new report entitled, “Stonewalled: Still demanding respect.” The report highlights police abuse and misconduct against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the USA. Cases of abuse, harassment, and humiliation are most common against transgender, minorities, and young people. Recently, a Los Angeles based transgender Latina was assaulted, and incarcerated by Miami police after she appeared on the Cristina show. After the show Maria Roman had gone to a popular Miami night club. It was there that she was assaulted verbally and physically by a partygoer. Instead of helping her, Miami police that were present only furthered her humiliation.

I was on the Cristina show, and live in Florida. I am discusted and repulsed by our justice system. They are ignorant and bigots. I am on a campaigne to educate our backwards society. In attempt to educate and create compasion, I have exposed myself and my wife to several talk show circuits, and now fear of facing discrimination myself. This is not right. There needs to be sensitivity training for our officers, the government, and all instituitions. There are over 5 million transsexuals in the world and the numbers are climbing. We are not going to go away.

They took an oath to serve and protect, and that means everyone. They need to be educated on transsexual issues, learn the origin and biological reasoning behind it. I am angry, and discusted with our system. I spent some time with Maria, since I was a guest on The Cristina Show, and a panalist. We did the show to educate people, but I guess some people have deep rooted issues, posibly fighting their own sexuality.
