GUEST: Trin Yarborough, journalist and author of “Surviving Twice: Amerasian Children of the Vietnam War”

“Surviving Twice: Amerasian Children of the Vietnam War,” is the title of independent journalist Trin Yarborough’s new book. Nearly 100,000 Amerasian children were born to U.S. soldiers during the course of the Vietnam War. In the book, Yarborough explores the personal stories of five such Amerasians who came to the United States under the Amerasian Homecoming Act. Under the Act, some 30,000 Amerasians came to the United States between the years of 1988-1994. “Surviving Twice,” highlights their obstacles as children of mixed parentage in Vietnam society as well as the difficulties they faced when they eventually came to the United States. After considering their experiences, the author then asks the poignant question, “When does a war really end?” I spoke with Trin yesterday and she began by explaining her personal motivation for writing the book.
