GUEST: Marianna Gonzalez, National Alliance for Human Rights

On Tuesday, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors authorized the training of ten sheriff’s deputies in immigration enforcement. Passed by a unanimous vote, the approved plan would allow for immigration status screenings of those booked in the County jail. As part of their responsibilities, trained deputies will be able to prepare deportions of people convicted of felonies. Opponents of the program believe that it would lead to racial profiling, civil rights violations, and would deter immigrants from reporting crimes to law enforcement officials. The decision made by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors comes at a time when historic mobilizations continue against House Resolution 4437 which, in part, would make being an undocumented immigrant a felony.

There will be a meeting on Thursday evening at 7 pm on the corner of Sedwick and University at Zacatecas Restaurant to discuss the County Board decision and the upcoming May 1st general strike. For more information call 951-743-7173.

In times of shrinking expectations,… everyone feels like a victim and pushes away outsiders to defend his own corner.
