Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
GUESTS: Ali Kazimi, award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto, Canada, Rahul Dholakia, director of the acclaimed film, “Parzania”
The Fourth Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles will be opening this Wednesday at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood. Among the films being showcased are Deepa Mehta’s highly awaited “Water,” and other feature films, as well as documentary films like “Bombay Calling.” KPFK is one of the media sponsors of the festival.
On the show today we’re joined by two film makers whose films are featured in the Indian film festival. Ali Kazimi is an award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto, Canada. His documentary, Runaway Grooms tells the story of how increasing numbers of expatriate Indian men are marrying Indian wives only to demand huge sums of money before bringing their new brides to their foreign residence. It’s a growing scam that uses the immigration and divorce laws of Western countries at the expense of young women and their families. Click here for more information.
We’re also joined by director Rahul Dholakia, whose acclaimed film Parzania is based on the Gujerat riots of 2002. A Parsi family living in Gujerat is swept up in the Hindu-led pogrom of Muslims which left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. Award winning actor Naseeruddin Shah plays the lead role in the film. The Indian Film Festival will be paying tribute to Shah for his life’s work. Click here for more information.
