May Day Actions!
GUESTS: Sharon Hoshida, Santa Barbara based activist, Patricia Park, Community organizer with KIWA, Shawn McDougal, Eric Einem, Pasadena Post Carbon Outpost Coordinator
As immigrants and their supporters in the US organize for a “National Day Without Immigrants,†on May 1st, Mexicans and Central Americans are planning a boycott of their own. Spreading rapidly by word of mouth and through e-mails, the plan to buy “Nothing Gringo,†on May 1st, has garnered support from various trade unions, business groups, and political leaders in Mexico and Central America. In a show of solidarity, those participating in the boycott will abstain from buying goods from American businesses. Here in the United States, a number of events will take place locally in Southern California on May 1st to rally for immigrants rights and against House Resolution 4437. There are two major marches. The first, at 12 noon on the corner of Olympic and Broadway, the second at 3 pm at MacArthur Park which will continue on Wilshire Boulevard to the La Brea Tar Pits. But there are many smaller events also taking place in solidarity which we’ll cover today.
We begin with events in Santa Barbara for our 98.7 fm listeners. For more information, visit www.allianceforimmigrantrights.com.
Next, we turn to what Korean immigrant activists are planning in LA. For more information, visit www.todayweact.org.
Next we’ll turn to the “mobile dance party for justice” which begins at the Farmer’s Market in LA. To join the dance party, email communityfeast@yahoo.com.
Finally, we’ll turn to Eric Einem for a solidarity gas boycott alongside the May Day events. For more information, visit www.lapostcarbon.org. Email eric@lapostcarbon.org.
