WaterGUEST: Devyani Saltzman, photojournalist and freelance writer, author of “Shooting Water,” and Deepa Mehta’s daughter

Award winning Canadian Indian film maker Deepa Mehta has finally released her much-awaited film Water. It’s the third part of her so-called “Elements Trilogy,” with the first film being Fire in 1996, followed by Earth in 1998. All three films are deeply political commentaries on Indian society. Water was the most high profile of the three, with production being stopped by mobs of rioting Hindu fundamentalists in 2000. They claimed that the story, which depicts the oppression of Hindu widows, was blasphemous. Finally, four years later, Mehta secretly resumed the film, with an entirely new cast, in Sri Lanka. Water is now being screened in cities all over the US. Joining me in studio is Deepa Mehta’s daughter, Devyani Saltzman, who worked on both the 2000 and 2004 productions, and has written a book called “Shooting Water.”

Devyani Saltzman will be present for a Book discussion & signing on May 3rd at 7 pm, at Borders Books & Music, Westwood. For more information, visit www.devyanisaltzman.com.

Gandhi once said, “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”
