Last Wednesday May 3rd, Mexican police attempted to block sixty flower vendors from setting up stands in Texcoco. The Mexican Government wants to convert the marketplace into a commercial zone that will include a WalMart. After a clash between residents and the police ensued, the vendors called on the residents of neighboring San Salvador Atenco for help. Hundreds of state and federal police responded with a crackdown that lead to dozens of injuries, rapes, and imprisonment of hundreds, and the death of a fourteen year resident. Soon after, the Zapatistas declared a Red Alert and halted La Otra Campaña, or The Other Campaign. Delegate Zero, formerly known as Sub-Comandante Marcos, made a rare television appearance yesterday denouncing the police crackdowns in Atenco. In the interview on Mexico’s Televisa network, Delegate Zero denied claims made by the PRI Presidential candidate, Roberto Madrazo, that the EZLN had instigated the clash. He also predicted that the events in Atenco last week would result in a political fallout that would effect Mexico’s upcoming presidential elections.
