The largest urban community garden in the country is still under siege. Although it now appears that help may be on the way for the South Central Farm in the form of a promise of $10 million from the Annenberg Foundation. Many activists and celebrities who have only just discovered the farm have set up camp including actresses Daryl Hannah and Laura Dern, as well as singers Joan Baez and Ben Harper and environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill. In a recent article, LA Weekly reporter Daniel Hernandez writes that “the battle over the South Central Farm is in fact a classic LA narrative: a development struggle.”
