After his surprise 6 hour trip to Iraq, President Bushyesterday held a press conference in which he sought to lower expectations of what should be defined as success in Iraq. According to the Financial Times, he sketched out a future strategy “that did not appear markedly different from the past.” Bush also said yesterday that he had a message for the so-called enemy: “Don’t bet on American politics forcing my hand because it’s not going to happen. I’m going to make decisions not based upon politics, but based upon what’s best for the United States of America.” By American politics, he presumably meant the unpopularity of the war here in the US. As the death toll in Iraq continues to mount daily, we turn today to people’s historian Howard Zinn, and writer Anthony Arnove.
