Carlos De LunaGUEST: Actor and activist, Mike Farrell, with Death Penalty Focus

A recent Chicago Tribune series highlighted new evidence that suggests a man may have been wrongfully murdered by the state of Texas. Carlos De Luna was executed in 1989 for the fatal stabbing of Wanda Lopez in Corpus Christi. The evidence calls into question De Luna’s guilt and strongly suggests that the murder may have been the work of another man, Carlos Hernandez. Hernandez reportedly bragged to family and friends that De Luna was executed for a crime Hernandez himself had committed. The series, entitled, “Did One Man Die for Another Man’s Crime?” is the fourth instance since December 2004 that a major U.S. newspaper has brought into serious question the execution of a possibly innocent person. The Chicago Tribune’s critical reporting on Illinois’ death penalty system helped prompt a moratorium on executions in the state. Mike Farrell of Death Penalty Focus believes that the Chicago Tribune’s most recent 3-part series should prompt an immediate halt to all executions in California as the state’s criminal justice system is under review by the California Commission of the Fair Administration of Justice.
