Rise Up and Shout is a special one-day only staged benefit reading featuring well-known actors and the words of visionary activists and thinkers in the past and present. Directed by Ellen Geer of The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, “Rise Up and Shout” features the words of Eugene Debs, Mother Jones, Woody Guthrie, Dolores Huerta, Frederick Douglass, and Cindy Sheehan. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Theatricum’s educational academy and repertory company and also an organization aiding women & children in Iraq. The actors who will be participating in the event include James Avery, Mariette Hartley, Charles Durning, Jean Smart and special surprise guests. I had the opportunity to speak with James Avery, who played Phillip Banks on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Mariette Hartley, who just finished a one-woman show called “If you get to Bethlehem, You’ve Gone too Far” and Ellen Geer the director of “Rise Up and Shout” and the Artistic Director of the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum.

The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Topanga CA 90290 (mid-way between the Ventura Freeway (Hwy. 101) and Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy. 1).
