Enclosed by walls and guarded by private security, residents of gated communities say their neighborhoods offer a sense of security. However, many sociologists bemoan these increasingly popular communities as exclusionary, elitist and anti-social. Critics of gated communities also claim that the barriers are akin to fortressing and are ultimately detrimental to the community as a whole. James RePass, according to his latest article published in the Providence Journal of Rhode Island, believes that gated communities are the enemy of democracy.
