Mardi Gras: Made in ChinaGUEST: David Redmon, film maker of “Mardi Gras: Made in China”

“Mardi Gras: Made in China”, is a new award winning documentary on corporate globalization by first-time director David Redmon. The film follows the commodity chain of bead necklaces ubiquitous at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It does so by juxtaposing the hardships faced by factory workers in China who manufacture them, with the revelry of Mardi Gras partygoers who adorn them. Factory workers in China are showed pictures of Americans soliciting beads on Bourbon Street by baring it all, while Americans are shown pictures of the hardships endured by Chinese workers. The ensuing conversations highlight issues of globalization and consumerism. Jessica Winter of The Village Voice said of the film, “Redmon’s sly, engrossing documentary is an expert riposte to smug proponents of globalization. Thomas Friedman and your fellow flat-earthers! Watch this movie!” The film has won 18 domestic and international awards and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Mardi Gras: Made in China will be showing for a week starting today at the Fairfax 3, Laemlle Theater, located at 7907 Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles.
