The Trials of Darryl Hunt
GUEST: Darryl Hunt, Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg, film makers of “The Trials of Darryl Hunt.”
In 1984, a young white journalist was brutally raped, sodomized, and stabbed to death in the town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A young black man, 19 year old Darryl Hunt, was charged with the crime and sentenced to life in prison based on the eye-witness identification of a former Ku Klux Klan member. Darryl Hunt maintained he was innocent. A trial by an almost all-white jury, completes the all-too familiar picture of racial injustice. It was a case that racially polarized Winston-Salem for over a decade with several trials and many defeats despite DNA evidence excluding Darryl from the crimes, as well as consistent pressure from the black community for justice. Nineteen years after his imprisonment, Darryl Hunt was finally absolved of all crimes. Two fimmakers, Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg followed the case for a decade and have just released a documentary about this incredible case, “The Trials of Darryl Hunt.” The film premiered at Sundance and has already won several awards.
The film will be showing at the Arclight Hollywood, as part of the 10th Annual Theatrical Documentary Showcase from August 18-24. The Arclight Cinemas are located at 6360 W. Sunset Blvd at Vine.
