Role of Independent Voters
GUEST: Jim Mangia, spokesperson for IndependentVoice.org and former National Secretary of the Reform Party
Late last Monday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reached a deal with legislators to raise California’s minimum wage by $1.25 over the next year and a half. Many analysts perceive the Governor’s move as an attempt to curry support from democratic and independent voters for the upcoming election. Independent voters, who currently comprise 23% of all registered voters in California, are likely to play a determining factor in who prevails in this year’s governor race. Numbering 3.6 million in California, independent voters are the fastest growing political force in the United States. IndependentVoice.org, an organization that sees a vast political potential in independents, is launching a new campaign challenging all gubernatorial candidates to endorse an agenda of independent minded political reform. Key reforms on the agenda include campaign finance reform, instant run-off voting and ballet access reform.
