“Stomping Ground,” a new art exhibit by young women of color, opened this past weekend in Los Angeles. Running until October 31st, at Le Florence Gallery in the historic Lucy Florence Coffee House and Gallery in Leimert Park, explores the theme of “homeland.” The exhibit is curated by Betty Marin, Brenda Zamora, Samira Yamin, and Pilar Castillo. Stomping Ground will feature various media including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, poetry, poetry/essays and music. The show’s theme of “homeland,” is an attempt to come to terms with a concept that has become charged with fear and insecurity in the five years since 9/11. For the exhibiting artists, “homeland,” is much more complex and includes subjects such as migration, culture, and family. Exhibit pieces on display also explore topics such as Hurricane Katrina and the recent and historic immigration rights marches.

Stomping Ground: Young Women of Color Explore Homeland is showing from September 9th – October 31st at the Lucy Florence Coffee House and Art Gallery. Lucy Florence is located at 3551 W 43rd Street, Leimert Park, in Los Angeles. For more information, call 323-293-1356. The gallery is open from 11 am to 1o pm daily.

There will be several film screenings during the exhibit:

September 17th from 4-7 pm: “Blackboards” by Samira Makhmalbaf and “We” featuring Arundhati Roy.

October 1st from 4-8 pm: “Daughters of the Dust” by Julie Dash
