“Maquilapolis: City of Factories,†is a new collaborative documentary between Mexican factory workers and filmmakers Segio de la Torre and Vicky Funari that highlights the struggles of globalization along the U.S. – Mexico border. The film chronicles the story of two Tijuana factory workers, Carmen Duran and Lourdes Lujan, as they challenge their multinational employer, as well as the U.S. and Mexican governments for their rights. Armed with cameras, Carmen and Lourdes organize for environmental justice and the right to severance pay. Maquilapolis: City of Factories was an Official Selection of the Tribeca Film Festival. Jay Weissberg of Variety Magazine said of the film, “Maquilapolis is the rare activist documentary that really does empower the individual women at the heart of its story.â€
Maquilapolis will be making its national broadcast premiere on Tuesday, October 10th on PBS as part of the 19th season of the P.O.V. independent documentary series.
