KPFK Fund Drive – Day 7 – Hour 2
Pacifica Authors Roundtable featuring Amy Goodman, Eric Mann, and Sonali Kolhatkar
Interview with Amy Goodman:
We begin with “Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back,†– the newest book by Amy Goodman, written with her brother David Goodman. The Goodman’s newest book follows on the heels of their previous New York Times Bestseller, “The Exception to the Rulers.†In “Static,†Amy and David tackle news fakers and oil profiteers in their blazing criticisms of the Bush administration and the seemingly all too cozy and complacent corporate media. By sifting through media manipulations, spin, and static, Amy and David offer differing views of Bush’s war on terror, the exporting of torture and the erosion of civil liberties. Also highlighted in the book are uplifting stories such as Cindy Sheehan’s protest outside of President Bush’s Crawford, Texas ranch.
Interview with Eric Mann:
Eric Mann, Director of the Labor/Community Strategy Center, is the author of a new book called “Katrina’s Legacy: White Racism and Black Reconstruction in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.†The book’s release came on the heels of the one year anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe. Glen Ford of the Black Agenda Report says Eric Mann’s book, “places the Gulf catastrophe in the historical context of racist capitalist rule in the U.S. at a critical time when the ‘cracks in the ruling class levees’ are visible for all to see. Mann’s book provides political leadership, the outlines of a plan for action, and calls us to our battle stations.†Eric Mann is fellow Pacifica programmer who hosts “Voices From the Frontline,†is aired regularly on Monday’s at 4 p.m.
Interview with Sonali Kolhatkar:
It’s been a little over five years since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11 conducted under the guise of “Operation Enduring Freedom.†Today, rather than a “liberatedâ€country, the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate with violence on the rise, opium production flourishing, and an ever increasing hunger crisis. In the wake of Afghanistan’s dire situation and the U.S. media’s silence, KPFK’s own Sonali Kolhatkar and her partner James Ingalls, have co-authored a new book analyzing the failures of U.S. foreign policy. “Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence,†is the couple’s first book and is published by Seven Stories Press. The authors detail the history of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, its current manipulations in the name of democracy, and offer suggestions on what concerned citizens can do about the situation. Acclaimed playwright and author Eve Ensler called Bleeding Afghanistan, “A wake-up call for everyone who thought the war in Afghanistan was a success story.â€
