Iraqi womenGUEST: Dahr Jamail, independent reporter

“Hundreds of thousands of widows are becoming the silent tragedy of a country sliding deeper into chaos by the day.” That’s the opening line of a new article by independent reporter Dahr Jamail, entitled “Widows Become Silent Tragedy.” He’s talking about Iraq where hundreds of thousands of men have been killed. According to one human rights organization in Iraq, “The total figure of men who have been killed, disabled or detained for long periods of time adds up to more than one and a half million … The average number of Iraqi family members is seven, so about ten million Iraqis are facing the worst living circumstances.” Meanwhile, a new report by the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) released today says that children in Iraq are some of the most deprived in the Middle East. Using under-five mortality rates as a critical indicator of the wellbeing of children, the report ranked the country 33rd worst in a global survey of 190 countries.
