Press Freedom Threatened in Watada Court Martial
| the entire program
GUEST: Sarah Olson, independent journalist and radio producer
When US Army Lt. Ehren Watada refused deployment to Iraq earlier this year, anti-war activists rejoiced. Watada is the highest-ranking member of the military to express his opposition to the war. The US Army is now going to court martial Watada. In doing so, they have targeted independent journalists to testify. Journalist Sarah Olson has been subpoenaed to testify at the January 4 pre-trial hearing in Watada’s court-martial. The Army has placed another independent journalist and frequent Uprising guest, Dahr Jamail, on the prosecution witness list. Both journalists are fighting back, saying the Army’s attempt to compel their participation in the court-martial threatens press freedom and chills free speech.
