On Saturday, Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her entry into the 2008 presidential election. In a videotaped announcement released on her campaign website, Senator Clinton said, “I’m in. And I’m in to win.†If elected, the Democratic Senator from New York would become the first female President of the United States. Entering an already diverse field of Democratic hopefuls that includes Bill Richardson, a Latino, and Barack Obama, an African American, Clinton has already taken an early lead in the polls. However, always a polarizing political figure, Senator Clinton angered many progressives with her 2002 vote to authorize U.S. military action in Iraq. Sensing a shift in popular opinion about the war in Iraq, Senator Clinton has recently come out against President Bush’s plan to send over 20,000 more troops. Clinton has said she will spend the next two years “doing everything in my power to limit the damage George W. Bush can do. But only a new president will be able to undo Bush’s mistakes and restore our hope and optimism.”
