Free Josh WolfGUEST: Julian Davis, Free Josh Wolf Coalition

This past Tuesday, February 6th, independent journalist and freelance videographer Josh Wolf became the longest jailed journalist in U.S. history for protecting his sources. He has now been incarcerated for 171 days. Josh Wolf was served a federal subpoena requiring his testimony as well as unpublished video footage he took of an anti G-8 protest in San Francisco in July 2005. When he refused to comply with the subpoena, he was then charged with contempt of court and imprisoned. Last month, a U.S. district judge refused to grant Wolf a motion to be released from the federal detention facility in Dublin, California where he is currently under what is called “coercive custody.” Wolf could remain in confinement for civil contempt until July of this year, when the grand jury that subpoenaed him expires. Meanwhile, various journalist and professional organizations have spoken out against his imprisonment. Sarah Olson, an independent journalist who was recently herself subpoenaed by the U.S. Army said that the jailed journalist “should be protected by the California shield law. He has never broken the law, nor been convicted of a crime.”
