American Fascists: The Christian Right and the war on America
GUEST: Chris Hedges, veteran journalist and war correspondent
Chris Hedges, veteran journalist and author, has just released his newest book, on the dangers of the Christian right in the United States. You may know him from his best-selling, “War is a Force that Gives us Meaning.†His new book is called “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America.†In it Hedges sounds the alarm on the dangers of the Christian right and explains how it embodies most aspects of traditional fascist movements. Most frighteningly, this movement has serious political power and a strong popular base. Hedges points to the hundreds of senators and members of Congress who have earned between 80 and 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups as one of many signs that the movement is burrowing deep inside the US government to subvert it. In researching American Fascists, Hedges attended various seminars and workshops by leaders of the Christian Right, and interviewed several people who were or still are part of the movement.
Chris Hedges spoke recently in Los Angeles about his book, American Fascists. We’ll hear an excerpt of his talk, followed by an in-depth interview I did with him.
Sonali’s Subversive Thought for the Day
“All Americans — not only those of faith — who care about our open society must learn to speak about this movement with a new vocabulary, to give up passivity, to challenge aggressively this movement’s deluded appropriation of Christianity and to do everything possible to defend tolerance.†— Chris Hedges
