Say it Plain: A Century of Great African American Speeches – $100
From Marcus Garvey to Maya Angelou, the 2 CD/Book set, Say It Plain gives listeners a vivid, moving portrait of how black Americans have sounded the charge against injustice, challenging the US to try to live up to its democratic principles. Most of these actual recordings of speeches by the 20th Century’s leading African American cultural, spiritual, and political figures have been tucked away in archives and libraries, and are presented in Say it Plain for the first time. From Booker T Washington’s speech in 1895, to Julian Bond in 2004, the recordings span an incredible era of American History.
What We Want, What we Believe: The Black Panther Party Library – $180
What We Want, What we Believe, is an incredible collection of 4 DVDs that document the early days of the Black Panther Party by Newsreel films. According to Kathleen Cleaver, ” This new dvd collection offers an extraordinary compilation that includes historic behind the scenes details taken from a wide range of interviews and contemporary events as well as the classic Newsreel films. Formed in 1967, the Newsreel film collective was dedicated to chronicling and analyzing current events. In their time, they produced more than three dozen films throughout the US and abroad. By working directly with the Black Panthers, Newsreel was able to explore realities often ignored by traditional media outlets, while producing documents that the Panthers and other activists could use in organizing their own communities.
