On Saturday, tens of thousands of Americans marched to protest the Iraq war, just days before the fourth anniversary of the US invasion. One of the most prominent demonstrations re-constructed the route taken by antiwar activists toward the Pentagon 40 years ago against the Vietnam war. MoveOn.org helped organize dozens of smaller protest vigils around the country. And on Friday in Washington DC, 200 people were arrested praying on front of the White House – they were part of a campaign called Christian Peace Witness for Iraq. Major demonstrations took place in Washington, New Y0rk, San Francisco and here in Los Angeles. Locally the LAPD claimed that 5-6000 people marched in Hollywood, while the ANSWER coalition, the organizer of Saturday’s march, claims 50,000 showed up.

Meanwhile Democrats have attached amendments to a $100 billion supplemental bill on war spending that would also set Sept. 1, 2008 as the date for withdrawing combat troops from Iraq. The amendment faces serious opposition.

In Iraq, Associated Press reports that Sunni insurgents killed at least six U.S. troops in Western Baghdad over the weekend, using a roadside bomb.
