Chalk: A New Film Presented by Morgan Spurlock
| the entire program
GUEST: Morgan Spurlock, independent documentary film maker, best known for his documentary Super Size Me, Mike Akel, Director, Co-Writer and Producer of Chalk
In 2004, independent documentary film maker Morgan Spurlock released a ground breaking film about the fast food industry and obesity in America. Super Size Me was the result of Spurlock’s interviews across the US with ordinary Americans and experts about obesity. During the filming, Spurlock carried out his own personal experiment, living on a strict diet of McDonalds fast food. He gained 24 pounds and his cholesterol rose 40%. Less than two months after Super Size Me premiered at the Sundance Festival, McDonalds announced that it will no longer sell any of their menu items in “Super Size.” The film was nominated for best documentary at the Academy Awards. Now, Morgan Spurlock started his own label designed especially to promote socially conscious films. The latest acquisition by Morgan Spurlock Presents is a film about public school teachers called Chalk. Filmed in the style of a documentary, Chalk is about the lives of rookie teachers at a public high school. It was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award earlier this year.
Chalk will be showing for a week at the Nuart Theater, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd starting this Friday May 11th. Teachers can buy one ticket at regular price and get a second ticket free when present their union card or teacher ID at the box office.
