How Much is a Mother’s Work Worth?
| the entire program
GUEST: Bill Coleman, Senior Vice President of Compensation at Salary.com
A new study published in the American Journal of Sociology shows that being a mother in the job market is quite challenging. Published by Shelly Correll of Cornell University, the study found that mothers were less likely to be hired than childless women or men with or without children. When mothers are hired their starting salary on average is $11,000 less than non-mothers. However, if this Sunday were Mothers pay day, stay-at-home moms would be receiving nearly $140,000 in annual salary for their work according to a new compensation survey by Salary.com. Working mothers with a full time job would earn a salary of nearly $86,000 in addition to their formal salaries. Over 40,000 mothers participated in Salary.com’s annual survey, which calculated the value of the numerous job functions that mothers perform, such as housekeeper, cook, psychologist and day care center teacher.
