9ine Digits Away From My Dream

| the entire program

nullGUESTS: Sara Guerrero, Artistic Director of Breath of Fire Latina Ensemble Theater and Executive Producer of 9 Digits Away From my Dream, Angela Cruz, Director, Aldo Sanchez plays Rene, Elizabeth Blanchard plays Ms. Jones

In a recent editorial to the Los Angeles Times, California State Senator Gil Cedillo defended his proposed Dream Act against the paper’s editorial criticisms. The Dream Act, or SB160, would allow undocumented students to be able to apply for state financial aid to pay in-state tuition fees for higher education. In defense of the legislation, Cedillo wrote to the LA Times that the “Passage of the Dream Act does not place one student’s future above another student’s future; it opens the door for all students.” Inspired by legislation such as the Dream Act is new play, “Nine Digits Away From My Dream.” A Theater for Social Justice Project, the play explores the aspirations and challenges undocumented students face when seeking higher education. The immigration rights play is a collaborative theatrical effort presented by the Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble, The OC Dream Team, OC Human Relations, and Fringe Benefits. Directed by Angela Cruz, “Nine Digits Away From My Dream,” is particularly intended to promote the Dream Act to teachers and educators. Based on true testimonials from students affected by their legal status, the play hopes to create a dialogue by presenting a wealth of useful information.

Thank you for supporting this play and also for letting the public know about OCDT and the issue in general. Not a lot of people know about this type of issues and this will definatelly help other undocumented students.
