Krudas Cubensi Debut in Southern California
| the entire program
GUESTS: Odalys Cuesta aka Wanda Kruda, member of the Cuban all-female trio, Angela Thielen, Spanish to English interpreter
Considered to be one of the most important groups to emerge from Cuba’s Hip Hop scene, Las Krudas Cubensi, a trio of women rappers, formed in Havana in the year 2000. Since that time, the group, comprised of Wanda, Pasa, and Pelusa Kruda, has been formative in presenting women’s voices into the Hip Hop movement in Cuba. After years of performing, they released their first independent self-titled album, “Krudas Cubensi,” in 2002. Songs on the album, such as “Eres Bella/You are Beautiful,” reflect the reputation the group has earned for its hard hitting feminist lyrics. Krudas Cubensi was also instrumental in the formation of the Hip Hop women’s collective “Omega Kilay.” The group, which has since relocated to the United States, has played at various international festivals, toured in Europe, and will be performing for the first time in Southern California this weekend. They will be headlining “A Night of Cuban Hip Hop: From La Havana to Santa Ana,” at Sol Art Gallery Café. The event will also feature a screening of the documentary, “Cuban Hip Hop: Desde el Principio,” by local filmmakers Vanessa and Larissa Diaz.
