Amu: A New Film by Shonali Bose

Winner of numerous international awards, the new feature film Amu, set in India, is the story of Kaju, a twenty-one-year-old Indian American woman who returns to her homeland to visit her family. The film takes a dark turn as Kaju stumbles against secrets and lies from her past. It turns out that a horrifying genocide that took place twenty years ago holds the key to her own origin. In November 1984, following the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh body guards, thousands of innocent Sikhs were massacred. The massacres were highly organized and involved the highest echelons of the State, and law enforcement. The bulk of mainstream media coverage blamed Hindu-Sikh communal violence for the killings. Shonali Bose, a young college student was there, working in a relief camp, shocked at the trauma and suffering she saw all around her. It was this experience in the earlier part of her life that prompted the film, Amu, which is Shonali Bose’s first feature film. Amu will debut in Los Angeles this Friday. Film maker Deepa Mehta calls Amu, “one of the best Indian films” she has ever seen.

Last week I saw amu at Yuba College. I applaud Shonali Bose and her husband for bringing the hinden truth about the massacre of thousnads of innoncent Sikhs organized by the Congress government and Party after the assination of Indira Gandhi. Only human beings care about what happens to other human beings. People can be moral, but goverenments are immoral.
What is Shonali’s husband’s name. He was the one who showed the movie at Yuba College.
