ICE Raids in OCGUESTS: Antonia Rivera with the OC Dream Team, Debbie, Orange County based activist, Guillermo Suarez, activist lawyer with Frente Contra las Redades

Two weeks ago, a hundred and seventy-five immigrants in thirteen Orange County cities were arrested during a five day sweep conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). The raids have fragmented families in immigrant communities, causing many children to be stranded without their parents. There have also been reports of pregnant women separated from their husbands. ICE Agents entered homes without search warrants, targeting primarily Latino work sites, community religious events, businesses, elementary schools, and even bike paths where parents are known to walk their children to school. Of the 175 detained in Orange County, a hundred have already been deported leaving remaining family members to fend for themselves without an income. This five day sweep is one of the first of many to follow as part of a new national operation. Five days ago ICE Agents raided three downtown Santa Barbara restaurants detaining at least thirty people. Meanwhile, students across California have organized a week long fast coinciding with a caravan that began in Santa Ana yesterday and continues north to San Francisco, making stops along the way at various press conferences. They are demanding immigration reform from the state’s elected representatives.

Frente Contra Las Redadas is urging Orange County residents to call 562-236-3939 if you witness or know of an ICE raid happening in the community. Frente will pass on the information to their text message list to document the raid and pass out “Know Your Rights” cards.

There will be Know Your Rights Events on Sunday July 2nd, 6 pm – El Centro Cultural De Mexico, 310 W 5th Street, Santa Ana
