Arizona’s Governor Signs an Employer Sanctions Law
GUEST: Elias Bermudez, CEO and Founder of Inmigrantes Sin Fronteras and radio show host of “”La voz del Emigrante”
Arizona’s governor, Janet Napolitano signed a bill on Monday the 2nd of July, prohibiting companies from hiring undocumented workers and requiring them to verify their workers’ employment eligibility. Napolitano, a Democrat, signed the bill after a three year struggle in Arizona’s Republican controlled legislature over state-imposed employer sanctions. Business leaders are criticizing the program, calling it inadequate and flawed. The law requires employers to verify their workers are legal U.S. residents through a federal program known as the Basic Pilot Program. This program is known to be quite prone to errors and inaccuracies. If a company was found to violate the law, its business license would be suspended temporarily. A second offense would mean a permanent revocation of that license. Napolitano justified her signature claiming the law’s goal is to weaken the economic incentive for immigrants to cross the border into Arizona. She also said that the federal government has failed its responsibility to address immigration reform, leaving it up to individual states to do so.

Nationwide ICE Raids Continue to Devastate Immigrant Communities
GUESTS: Antonia Rivera with the OC Dream Team, Debbie, Orange County based activist, Guillermo Suarez, activist lawyer with Frente Contra las Redadas
Two weeks ago, a hundred and seventy-five immigrants in thirteen Orange County cities were arrested during a five day sweep conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). The raids have fragmented families in immigrant communities, causing many children to be stranded without their parents. There have also been reports of pregnant women separated from their husbands. ICE Agents entered homes without search warrants, targeting primarily Latino work sites, community religious events, businesses, elementary schools, and even bike paths where parents are known to walk their children to school. Of the 175 detained in Orange County, a hundred have already been deported leaving remaining family members to fend for themselves without an income. This five day sweep is one of the first of many to follow as part of a new national operation. Five days ago ICE Agents raided three downtown Santa Barbara restaurants detaining at least thirty people. In June, 165 workers were arrested after an ICE Raid at a Del Monte plant in Portland, Oregon. In March, more than 300, mostly women workers were arrested as part of a raid on a leather factory in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Georgia Could Execute an Innocent Man
GUEST: Laura Moye, Deputy Director with the Amnesty International USA Southern Regional Office in Atlanta
A thirty eight year old black man is set to be executed by the state of Georgia as early as July 17th. Troy Anthony Davis has been on death row for 15 years for the murder of white police officer Mark McPhail. Davis, who claims he is innocent, was convicted solely on the testimony of witnesses. There was no physical evidence linking him to the murder, nor was a murder weapon ever found. In fact, 7 of the 9 non-police witnesses who testified have now recanted their allegations, many of whom allege police coercion. According to Amnesty International USA there is evidence in Davis’ favor, which has never been heard in a courtroom, and is enough to demonstrate that Davis should be granted a new hearing.
