Conyers on the Spot for Impeachment
| the entire program
GUEST: Congressman John Conyers, interviewed by Mansoor Sabbagh of Global Voices for Justice, and KPFK volunteer
This past Monday, antiwar mom Cindy Sheehan was arrested alongside forty-five other pro-impeachment activists after refusing to leave the office of Democratic Congressman John Conyers. Protesters targeted Conyers to try to pressure him to take action on impeachment measures against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. They specifically urged Conyers, who is the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, to actively support Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s bill to impeach the Vice President. Sheehan, alongside Reverend Lennox Yearwood and retired CIA officer Ray McGovern, met with Conyers for nearly an hour only to leave disappointed. According to the three activists, the congressman had told them that impeachment was unlikely due to a lack of necessary votes. Capitol Police then arrested forty-six pro-impeachment activists for disorderly conduct after they refused to leave. Just three days prior to the arrests, Congressman Conyers spoke about impeachment at the Trilateral Health Care Conference in San Diego. In his speech Conyers cautioned that he has to “think about the future,” and mentioned the possibility of retroactively impeaching the President and Vice President after they have finished their terms. After his speech, Mansoor Sabbagh of Global Voices for Justice managed to interview the Congressman.
