In honor of the women’s suffrage movement, a commemorative parade will take place in the state capitol later this month. Inspired by the 1913 suffrage parade on the nation’s capitol, statewide organizers will be gathering to reaffirm women’s right to vote. After a long and dedicated struggle, women in the United States gained the right to vote after the constitution was amended on August 26th, 1920. The second annual women’s equality parade and rally will take place on Saturday August 25th, to not only look to the past, but struggle onward towards the future. Activists and organizers cite the fact that in the last presidential election, which was important in many ways to women’s issues, twenty-two million single women did not exercise their right to vote. In response, the theme for this year’s parade is “Our Voice Equals Our Vote,” and will bring together various organizations from labor, environment and social justice movements. The coalition for California’s second annual Women’s Equality Day parade is calling for women, girls and their supporters statewide to join in on the celebration festivities.
