In Gaza, Palestinians are still suffering blackouts after the European Union suspended the financing of fuel deliveries for the impoverished territory’s only power plant. It was the latest blow to hit one of the world’s most overcrowded places as Gaza has been effectively sealed off by Israel since the Hamas movement seized control two months ago. Both Hamas and Fatah accused each other of being responsible for the “criminal” cuts and called on Gazans to come out on to the streets in protest. The power station, which according to the EU produces between 25 and 30 percent of the electricity in Gaza, shut the last of its four generators last Sunday after it did not receive fuel from Israel. The Israeli company that delivers the fuel said the EU — which finances the supplies — had made the decision to halt deliveries. A spokesperson for the EU’s executive arm in Brussels said security concerns and fear that Hamas will not pay for the fuel lay at the heart of the review. The blackouts are only one of the many problems the territories are facing as the fallout from Hamas’ rise to power over Fatah has resulted in international boycotts and censure. Meanwhile military attacks continue as six Hamas fighters were killed yesterday in the Gaza Strip when Israeli fire hit their jeep in one of the deadliest single strikes since Hamas took control of the territory.
