Living Beyond Our Means While Trying to Wage a Living

The Public Interest Research Groups, along with the American Council on Education, says that colleges and universities often ignore harassing and sometimes deceiving credit card marketing on campus. The consumer group adds that schools sometimes provide financial institutions students personal information such as names, phone numbers and email address in exchange for a fee so that banks can push credit cards onto young students. The group is now calling on schools to limit credit card marketing on campus, and wants schools to provide financial literacy to would-be credit card holders. By the time the average college student graduates, she or he owes about $30,000 in loans – the amount the same student owes in consumer debt is $20,000. As people in the US, young and old, continue to struggle to make ends meet, more and more of them find themselves severely impacted by credit card debt: consumer bankruptcies in the past 25 years have risen more than 400 percent. Today, we look at debt – a portrait of a country, before the bubble bursts.
