The Working Poor: From Salt of the Earth to Made in LA

A new documentary follows the political development of three sweatshop workers that labor in LA’s Fashion District. “Made in LA”, directed by filmmaker Alumdena Carracedo and producer Robert Bahar, chronicles the lives of Lupe Hernandez, Maura Colorado, Maria Pineda and other organizers at the Garment Workers Center (GWC) and their struggle against fashion chain “Forever 21”. In 2001, the women banded together at the GWC to launch a very public challenge in the worker-led boycott of “Forever 21”. The documentary introduces the audience to the global economic fault lines of the fashion economy while highlighting how each woman develops from victim to organizer.
