Che: Rise and Fall
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez aired his weekly program “Alo, Presidente”, yesterday in Cuba to mark the 40th anniversary of Che Guevara’s arrest and execution. The program, which aired live in Venezuela and Cuba, was broadcast in the Santa Clara Monument complex where Che is entombed. Santa Clara is the sight of Che’s most successful military operation during the course of the Cuban revolution. Cuban President Fidel Castro called into the program, marking his first live media appearance since a state-secret health condition sidelined him more than a year ago. In the course of Castro and Chavez’s nearly one and a half hour conversation, the two leaders discussed Che’s legacy, among other things. Castro signed off the program with his former comrade’s familiar refrain, “Hasta la Victoria Siempre.” Prior to “Alo, Presidente,” Chavez met with the Che’s widow, Aleida March, and their children. Che was leading a guerrilla campaign in Bolivia forty years ago as part of his tri-continental strategy against the forces of imperialism when he was captured on October 8, 1967 by the Bolivian army with the assistance of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The following day, Che Guevara was executed in the town of La Higuera.
