Encounter PointlEncounter Occupation: The Struggle for Peace in the Middle East

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said it is time to establish a Palestinian state. Rice spoke with reporters ahead of a highly anticipated peace conference which is set to take place in Annapolis, Maryland next month. Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the talks should address borders and the Palestinian right of return, as well as water rights and the dismantlement of settlements. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert hinted that Israel might consider handing parts of Jerusalem over to Palestine – although it’s unlikely that Israeli lawmakers will agree to such a proposal. According to the International Middle East Media Center, a Palestinian source now says that Ahmad Qurie, who heads the Palestinian negotiating team that will meet in Maryland next month, has threatened to resign and withdraw from the negotiations because he senses that Israel lacks the seriousness needed ahead of the talks.
